iMac Fan 문제발생

iMac을 켜는 순간 비행기가 날아갈 듯 괭음을 울리면 냉각팬(fan)이 요란하게 울려덴다.
이런 경우는 처음이라서 무척 당황스러웠다.
Service Center에 전화해보니 시동과 동시에 전기적인 혹은 물리적인 문제로 인한 일시적인 현상일 수도 있고,
기계적인 결함으로인한 문제일 수도 있다는 얘기를 했다.

내 경우는 다행히 전자의 경우로 해결방법은 의외로 간단했다.
일단 전원을 끄고 코드까지 뽑은 상태에서 2,3분가량 기다린다.
보다 확실하게 잔류전원을 제거하기 위해서는 5분정도 기다리는 것도 괜찮을 것 같다.
다시 전원을 연결하고 부팅을 한 후 냉각팬이 정상적으로 작동하는지 확인한다.
이때 다시 냉각팬이 비정상적으로 작동하면 위 과정 중 전원코드를 뽑고 기다리는 시간을 1시간 이상으로 늘려보고 코드를 다시 연결 후 재시동하도록 한다.
상태가 개선되지 않으면 서비스센터에 접수한 후 장비를 입고시켜야 한다.

Gadget

A gadget is a small technological object (such as a device or an appliance) that has a particular function, but is often thought of as a novelty. Gadgets are invariably considered to be more unusually or cleverly designed than normal technology at the time of their invention. Gadgets are sometimes also referred to as gizmos.

History

The origins of the word "gadget" trace back to the 1800s. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, there is anecdotal evidence for the use of "gadget" as a placeholder name for a technical item whose precise name one can't remember since the 1850s; with Robert Brown's 1886 book Spunyam and Spindrift, A sailor boy's log of a voyage out and home in a China tea-clipper containing the earliest known usage in print. The etymology of the word is disputed. A widely circulated story holds that the word gadget was "invented" when Gadget, Gauthier & Cie, the company behind the casting of the Statue of Liberty (1886), made a small-scale version of the monument and named it after their firm; however this contradicts the evidence that the word was already used before in nautical circles, and the fact that it did not become popular until after World War I. Other sources cite a derivation from the French gâchette which has been applied to various pieces of the firing mechanism, or the French gagée, a small tool or accessory. The spring-clip used to hold the base of a vessel during glass-making is also known as a gadget. The first atomic bomb was nicknamed the gadget by the scientists of the Manhattan Project, tested at the Trinity site.

Mechanical gadgets

Clocks, bicycles, and thermometers are amongst the very large number of gadgets that are mechanical and also very popular. The invention of mechanical gadgets though is based more on innovation of the inventor rather than education.

Electronic gadget

Electronic gadget are based on transistors and integrated circuits. Unlike the mechanical gadgets one needs a source of electric power to use it. The most common electronic gadgets include transistor radio, television, cell phones and the quartz watch.

Programmable gadgets

Most of the modern gadgets belong to this category

Application gadgets

Computer programs that provide services without needing an independent application to be launched for each one, but instead run in an environment that manages multiple gadgets. There are several implementations based on existing software development techniques, like JavaScript, from input, and various imaged formats.

This earliest documented use of the term gadget in context of software engineering was in 1985 by the developers of AmigaOS, the operating system of the Amiga computers (intuition.library and also later gadtools.library). It denotes what other technological traditions call GUI widget-a control element in graphical user interface. This naming convention remains in continuing use (as of 2008) since then.

It is not known whether other software companies are explicitly drawing on that inspiration when featuring the word in names of their technologies or simply referring to the generic meaning. The word widget is older in this context.
